Vault Setup Guide

One shared game library, set up right.

The full technical walkthrough: pairing the Vault Server, installing the Node app on every PC, designating an Update PC, and (the step most guides skip) actually publishing what it installs.

Chapter 1

How Vault fits together

Before installing anything, it helps to know the three roles involved and how they actually relate. Every PC, including the one that'll host the shared disk, installs with the exact same choice: Agent + Vault. Which one actually becomes the Server isn't picked at install time at all; you assign it afterward, from the Center panel. The short version on the Vault page leaves out one real step that this guide covers in full.

  • The Server

    One PC at your center, assigned as the Server from the Center panel once its Agent is installed and paired. Hosts the shared disk and every other PC's connection to it.

  • The Update PC

    One gaming PC you designate afterward, from the Center panel. It's the only machine whose installs and patches can be shared with the rest of the floor.

  • Every other PC

    Installed the same way, just never assigned as the Server. Mounts the same shared content. Anything installed here doesn't stick, it's cleared the next time that PC restarts.

Note

If your server PC is also one of your gaming PCs, common on a smaller floor, assign it as Server + gaming instead of plain Server; same install either way, it's just which option you pick when assigning it. Chapter 3 covers exactly how.

Heads up

The part most guides skip: installing a game on the Update PC does not make it available to the rest of the floor by itself. It has to be explicitly published afterward. That's its own chapter (7), and it's the step that actually gets games onto every PC.

Two different panels are involved, split by who normally does what: switching to a Vault-inclusive plan, turning Vault on, and provisioning the disk happen on the Owner panel; assigning which PC is the Server and day-to-day machine management, including which PC is the Update PC, happens on the Center panel, since that's where staff on-site actually are. Each chapter below says which one it's on.
